The Dutchess County Agricultural Society has great events for the Spring, Summer & Fall

I will update for 2013 as soon as the new schedule is out, thank you! In the meantime, please visit Dutchess Fair.com.

The enjoyable events held at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds in Rhinebeck NY for the year 2012 have begun and the response has been wonderful.

There are events for your many interests and the Fair works hard to keep everything affordable for you and your family as well as maintaining a safe, clean environment for you.

"Great food quality and selection",  "...the grounds and buildings are so well maintained and clean..." , and
" we feel safe here..." are comments that are often put forth by visitors. The Rhinebeck Car Show & Swap Meet kicks off this week, May 4 -6, folowed by the 4th Annual Pet Palooza and the Rhinebeck Antiques Fair June 26 & 27, July 21, and Oct. 6 & 7. Another car show will be held, the Rhinebeck Nationals July 27 & 28. There's also a Pigeon Show Oct. 6.

Many charitable organizations use the fairgrounds for their events which enables them to carry on their programs which benefits our area. Some of those organizations are the  Epilepsy Fdtn. May 20, the Rhinebeck Chamber of Commerce Health & Wellness Fair June 2, the Cancer Relay for Life June 2 & 3, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Sept. 15, The Autism Walk was held April 29.

Of course, there are also the great car shows, the craft shows, the antiques fair, the Antique Motorcycle & Machinery show June 8 & 9, the HV Wine & Food Festival Sept.8 & 9, the Sheep & Wool family festival Oct. 20 & 21. All of these events help the Agricultural Society support agriculture and programs such as the 4-H.Rhinebeck Community Blog

We mustn't overlook the outstanding Dutchess County Fair August 21-26, one of the top Fairs in the U.S. which showcases the world of Agriculture and its importance in the daily life of all. This is the 167th Annual Dutchess Co. Fair!!!

There are event schedules in many great businesses in the area with more details. For more info, please call 845-876-4000 and/or visit the website dutchessfair.com.

The Agricultural Society exists to foster and support agriculture in our state and area and all is geared toward that mission.

For disclosure, I am a member of the Society serving on numerous committees.

Many Rhinebeck & Dutchess County citizens were in the Civil War !

2011 is the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, which many say should really be called the War Between the States which it actually was when one really thinks about it. Besides that, the fact that the Union was preserved through it is the biggest positive fact as well as the end of slavery.

The bungling in the Peninsula Campaign should not have occurred & from reading about it, perhaps it could have been finished right there. Hindsight is 20-20 though.

I understand that there will be tremendous re-enactment programs held in Gettysburgh, PA and other areas that were the scene of the tremendous battles.

To be continued, thanks.Montgomery Post #429, American Legion, Rhinebeck, NY

How about our Seals, Air Force, CIA & other military personnel!!!

The whole operation surrounding the elimination of bin Laden is one for the text books.

The planning and the actual carrying out of the plan is something to marvel at. Of course, unlike in the movies, some things can go wrong such as the loss of one helicopter, however, none of our people were lost and the world is rid of one sick, evil person. Just think if this could have been with Hitler!

We must be ever vigilant.

Iceland, a totally different landscape!

We visited Iceland a few years ago with friends, staying in Reykjavik. The area & the country were booming at that time, but I have read they are experiencing difficult times now as most cities and people are.

At that time also, they were very concerned about the rumour of the U.S. withdrawing our military presense from there and worried about what "good" country would replace the U.S. It was a great concern to many of the people with whom we spoke.

To be continued, thanks.
